While sodium bisulfite and sodium metabisulfite are two different compounds the commercial product sold as bisulfite is mostly, if not all, the metabisulfite. So, for photographic purposes the metabisulfite will do. Kodak has verified that the substance they sold as bisulfite is actuall as above. Evidently true bisulfite is either hard to make or hard to keep pure in storage.
