Hi, Thanks for the tip regarding the use of rubylith . I have 4 of those circular Kodak safelight that screw into a socket. I took the OC filter out, measured out 4 round filters on a sheet of rubylight, and presto, red safelights. I put the circular sheet on top of the OC filter and insert the filter.

It is dark, though, I have 15w bulbs in them. Would switching them out for 40w bulbs brighten things up a bit or is 40w too much???? I just so happen to have 4x40w bulbs. Still, cheaper than buying the red glass filters. What is their designation???? O_?

Now to get more rubylith, have t make a filter for my 8x10 safelight.

Cheers,
Bogdan

I think you could probably go to 25 watts but 40 will overheat the lamps. Red safelights generally look dim to someone used to an OC. Basically, the safelight is bright enough to keep you from falling over things but can't be used to make any sort of judgement about print quality. Actually, I find even an OC misleading. Partly that's due to brightness, partly the effects of human vision, and partly that some papers are yellowish and a bit hazy until they are fixed long enough to clear. I can see the latter effect even under the safelight. Do the K-4 test even with the Rubylith just to make sure.
