Ethanol probably works just as well as Isopropanol. The problem is that most people can not get the pure stuff at a reasonable a price because it is taxed as liquor. Ethyl rubbing alcohol is denatured with other stuff, frequently Acetone.

Denatured ethanol can contain a wide gamut of denaturants. For optical applications, something like Formula 30 ( 30 % methanol ) is essentially residue free. On the other hand it could contain naphthalene, aviation gasoline, or GOKW (God only knows what).
