I do remember having pre-exposed BW film , long time ago, with a white plexiglass diffuser against the sunshade of the lens. More or less as is described in "The negative", results came up ok (ie printable) but I found it a bit cumbersome to do on location with roll film. Perphaps preexposing sheet film on the studio/lab will drop part of the drawbacks.
