Not better, it is another choice.

You could use N- development and increase time to get back your contrast.... 
test, test, test......

The original issue was had anyone the data to perform the "trick" of 
pre-exposure......  I think you got some answers, but not many
use this technique at all or frequently.  If you add to that the ability of the 
user to print successfully ( a master printer could
make gold out of black negatives, some of, myself included could take a gold 
negative and make it look like trash....) I think you
have too many variables.....individual variables.

Where are you going on this subject?  Help us get there a bit faster.....
