I was in a small gallery last month, in Nevada City, CA (see
http://www.exposuregallerync.com/) and noticed that a number of
the prints offered for sale were described as "pigmented ink" prints
or some similar language, along with the silver gelatin prints we
all know and love. I asked the shopkeeper (it may have, in fact,
been Shannon Perry) about this - are collectors really buying inkjet
prints? Are they satisfied with the archival characteristics?
She was adamant that gallery customers were completely happy
with these "pigmented ink" prints, particularly with the latest
generation of pigmented inks and media.
Most of the inkjet prints, BTW, were from MF and LF negs, a number
of them were effectively "contact" prints from 8x10 negs. The prints
really did look very good, which is consistent with my experience with
the output of my Epson R2400. I'm not planning on doing LF any time
soon, but I am upgrading my film scanner to an LS-9000, though the
lowly Epson 4490 is an amazing value.
I know this is a "pure silver" group, but hybrid "capture on film,
print with ink" is clearly gaining a fair bit of respect. I would have
to say "it's for real".
