The neg carrier that I am using is made for 4"x5", and I just put a mask on it which masks down to 6cmx4.5cm - haven't had issues with damage to the negs. The resulting sandwich is less satisfying for the MF case than it is for the LF panoramic case - with MF, I put the mask over the negative, so that the emulsion side of the neg is against the lower glass, then the mask, then the top of the neg carrier.
