The main difference is the use of rollers to squeeze the air out of
the "sandwich" as the print moves through the laminating machine.
With a dry-mounting press you press and heat the entire surface more
or less at the same time, so air bubbles can easily be trapped.
I looked around eBay and saw a hot laminator with a temperature dial
that went from 176 to 320F. That's pretty much in line with many dry
mount presses.
Come to think of it, when I first experimented with laminating prints,
I used to take the laminated print and press it in my dry mount press
at something like 250F for a minute or so to "smooth out" the
appearance. Eventually I discovered that if I set the laminating
machine for laminating material that was thicker than it really was
(e.g. 5 mil instead of 3 mil), the results right out of the machine
were much better. (It used a higher heat or moved it more slowly
through the machine, and the adhesive melted more fully.)
Give it a try, though. Get some ultra clear GBC laminating pouches
from Staples or similar office supplies store. Just be careful to put
the lamination pouch + print between two pieces of thin paper like
newsprint or flip-chart paper. When you heat up and press the pouch,
some of the adhesive with ooze out the edges, and the paper with
protect your press. It doesn't have to be special "release" paper or
anything fancy, since it doesn't touch the print itself.

Hi,
I have a hot press for mounting prints. Is it possible to laminate
cards with a hot press ? Or are those laminating machines generally
hotter ?
Thanks
