I had, before purchasing the 4x5, seriously debated about getting a Nikon
D2H. They are, used, about the same price as the Shen Hao (with lens and all
the
trimmings).

Now that I have spent the weekend using the 4x5, and we did landscapes and
portraits using flash/softbox and just hot lights, and I must have been insane
to be even contemplating buying a D2H.

The one thing I really wanted out of a DSLR was the ability to check my
strobe work. The ability to see right away what happened really appealed to me.
But with 4x5 I can do the same with a poloroid.

I am never happy with my digitized images. I can spend hours in photoshop
and it never gets to the point where I want it. I never quite have that problem
in my darkroom. There's a point where you figure "that's as good as it's gonna
get".

There's a few other differences I noticed about composition in comparison
to
35mm. In 35mm, at least the stuff I shoot, filling the frame is Uber important.
The shot has to be tight, wide or with a zoom. You can of course attempt to
layer using a wide angle but generally, I like to fill the frame.

But with LF, I noticed that changes. Because you can muck with the DOF so
much more is possible. We took a few shots where I placed my girlfriend a ways
back, dead center of the frame and focused and tilted the bellows in such a way
that everything before her and everything after her was out of focus. But she
popped out. All around her was soft rocky beach and water. Amazing stuff.

That would NEVER work in 35mm. If I had tried that in 35mm it would have
looked like a bloody snapshot from my holidays.. Oh wait, that's what it was.
;-)
