[pure-silver] Re: Mistakes Galore

Dear Justin,

I was going to compile a comprehensive guide to mistakes that you can
make in your newfound large format work, but I see that it will not be
necessary. You are doing just fine on your own. Do carry on.

PAY NO ATTENTION. To the spoilsports that tell you you have to close
the lens shutter before you take the darkslide out of the holder. I
frequently forget to do this and some of the best aethereal shots result -
the modelling lamps from the flashes pre-expose the film and give warm fuzzy
edges and disturbing eye highlights. It may be going a little far to remove
the holder from the back of the camera before putting back the darkslide and
expecting the picture to be optimal, but why not experiment. I seem to
have.....

DID YOU KNOW? That you can break the synch post off a Copal 1 shutter by
just looking at it. I did. And then found out that the elements of the lens
could be unscrewed and put onto another Copal 1 that was sitting in the
camera box and the whole day was saved. The lenses were a Nikkor 135 and a
Schneider 90 but the screw threads on the elements were interchangeable. The
repairman charged a fortune for replacing the synch post but I am going to
be careful not to look at it in the future.

HAVE YOU CONSIDERED? Three plastic 2 Ltr. food containers from the
supermarket as developing tanks. And buying some SS 4 x 5 film hangers from
eBay. They are cheap, indestructible, and you can get a real 40's rythym
going there in the dark as you dip and lift and tilt. Best thing is no
scratches on the film.

AIN'T THIS? A hell of a lot more fun than sitting at a computer steering a
mouse. Now that you have a large format camera you can get a " SCHEIMPFLUG
RULES OK? " bumper sticker and anyone who honks at you on the freeway is a
friend.

     Uncle Dick
