Luna Star digital from the early '90's ... never had any
problems with the buttons. It used 9 volts
That can make a terrific difference. The more voltage there is
to break through switch crud the more reliable the switch.
In power plants and other high reliability industrial systems
it is not uncommon for 48VDC or 100VDC to be applied to
relay and switch contacts - even when the switch goes to a
process control computer that runs on bog-standard 5VDC logic
power.
But between the different meters it is likely the switch circuitry,
the keyboard and the contact material are all different. The
original Luna-Pro digital is a rather cheaply made affair, although
it works well when it works. t also chews through batteries even
when it is off, but luckily it uses a single AA cell.
