The 7 meter sensor is in the viewfinder -- not behind the lens -- and reads a constant
"center weighted" area of the viewfinder. (Since the area doesn't change, the effective
*image* area depends on the lens focal length. For wide angle lenses, it is more of a
"spot" than "center weighted".)
You can always meter off a gray card and forget about the lens focal length. Even
better, calibrate your ISO for metering off the palm of your hand and forget about the
gray card.
