I use Thunderbird (v45.3.0, running under Linux), and there are "Reply" and "Reply
List"
buttons. Both put only the list email address in the "to" field. If I want to send a reply directly to the original poster, I have to edit the "To" field.
Private 'off-list' responses have gotten posted to the list before, and have many times resulted in starting an interesting conversation!

Ditto on the default 'reply to all'. but
have a 'reply to sender only' alternative.
Mail clients, like Thunderbird, already have a button called "reply"
that replies to the sender only (if the email headers are correct, which
is up to the list configuration) and a button called "reply-all" that replies
to all.
It's not the first time this issue has come up in the 40-year history of email
:-)

I think the default should be 'reply to all'.

The list is configured so "reply" means "reply-to-all". So this will happen
all the time.
Perhaps it would be better configure the list so "reply" replies to the
send and
"reply-to-all" replies to all? :-)

P.S. Yes, I clicked "reply" and I know it's going to the list :-) Been
burned at that fire
a few times in my life.

DEAR RICHARD AND LIST,
Well, I went and replied to your original email so it went to the list
as well! Sorry. I also will continue this
off list!
