Why is a CLS-450 (or for that matter the CLS-201 that preceded it) quite slow
in comparison to a CLS-500 or CLS-501? All of these (save earliest versions of
the CLS-201) use the same 24v 250w halogen reflector lamps. Later versions offer
some mechanical improvements but especially higher densities. Should these
densities been needed on the earlier heads one uses 6x6cm gelatine filters
(typically single) and while their loses are higher than dichroic filters itd
not that significant, especially given the trend in colour papers towards being
almost "too fast" for our darkroom settings--- and where the nicest feature
of the CLS-501, namely the neutral density filters, come into play.

On my 900 Durst I have mixing boxes that go from the colour head all the way
down to the negative stage and together with the 250w bulb its quite bright---
as bright as my (its contemporary back in the mid 1970s) Agfa Colourhead (uses
a A1/5 type lamp of 240v @ 250 watt with a T10 envelope) which uses condensors.

For B&W I like graded paper and tend to use anything from condensors to
cold light. For variocontrast papers, however, I've found the Ilford 500 head
to be faster and much more convienient. With its 600 watts it not as bright
as it could be but that's due to its internal mixing box design--- which can
be replaced.

Another good option are high intensity LEDs. By doing splitgrade printing one
does not need any fancy electronics placing its cost well under the cost to
get a set of Ilford Multigrade filters for my Durst.
