Bad fixer.. I think someone left chemicals in it and they went bad..
The sulphur is probably caked onto the machine--- difficult to remove.
There are probably loads of other nasty bits and some are probably
stand-ins for the Blob from the 1950s film classic..

Cleaning the machine will take MORE than just rinsing with water.. You
need to really clean it out.

Get some Tetenal Tank cleaner.. or (the same thing) some potassium dichromate
bleach.... (and the chorus sang "No No that stuff is eveeeel")
