I checked both the Kodak and Agfa versions of Nelson's. They are identical to the patent and call for Ammonium Persulfate.

Ammonium Persulfate (white powder, corrosive, hydroscopic) is used for etching printed circuit boards. I don't know if Radio Shack still carries it. Other electronic suppliers should have it.

Be sure not to get Ferric Chloride (foul, corrosive, brown)
also used for PCB etching.
