My guess is that a test of residual hypo in wash water would be very
dependent on the physics of the washer (volume of water/area of paper, time
of immersion in last wash, etc). If you used a "cascade" or continual flow
washer would you transfer the print to a measured quantity of water at a
certain temperature for a set time with defined agitation to get a sample?
Just a guess from the comfort of my armchair.

Has anyone used both and can share their experience?
