Here's my sink:
http://www.visualimpressions.com/DarkroomSink
I made it from 5/8" plywood. Cut the pieces, glue and screw them together.
Use a hole saw to cut the drain holes. Get either stainless (what I did) or
plastic sink drains and install them - recess them so that they are flush
with the top surface of the plywood (which is the sink bottom) which is
easier with a stainless drain since it is thinner. Use a construction
adhesive or mastic under the drain flange to insure that it stays sealed.
After it is glued, screwed, and drains installed. paint the whole thing
with four coats of "Marine Epoxy Resin," sanding lightly in between coats.
The final coat doesn't need sanding but a very fine steel wool will make it
look pretty.
That's it! Plywood, cut, glue, screw, drains, epoxy, done. The sink you are
looking at is 20 years old and still perfect.
As you can see, I made a high back splash and plumbed with copper just
above the splash. The sink is 6' long in the long part and 4' long in the
short part. Both parts are 30" wide. The sink is 8" deep and the back
splash is 24" high.
Under the sink is both hot and cold water preliminary water filters.
From right to left - Dunwright & Vogel 20x24 fiber washer, Hass temp
controller, the black filter looking thing is a deionization cartridge. To
the left of it, in the corner, is a final filter for the temp controlled
water. At the far left is a JOBO ATL-2400 processor with a myriad tubes and
lids stored above it. On the wall above the sink, at the ceiling, is an air
conditioner. The compressor is through the wall outside, only the cooling
coils and fans are in the unit you see. It's remote control. Dead quiet.
And will freeze the b**ls off of a brass monkey if set too cold. I just set
the temp that I want (68 deg) and everything in the darkroom assumes and
remains at that temp all summer long. My youngest son is in industrial air
conditioning and one day decided to help his old man stay cool in the
darkroom. It was left over from a job he did, so I got it... :-) A $2000
unit for naught!
Over the right dogleg of the sink is a hypo viewing light (hanging from the
ceiling) and pull chain. One of those things that is indispensable! My hypo
goes in that short sink part next to the washer.
That's undoubtedly far more than anyone wanted to know, but once one (at
least in my case) starts typing, well, it's difficult to stop. So I'll stop
now as I have to get back to work.
:-)
