[pure-silver] Re: How long do you spend in the darkroom ?

I am spoiled by my enlarger - I use an Ilford MG600 which has a probe - you
compose the image on the easel, and then use the probe to point out the darkest
shadow areas where you want to maintain detail, and the brightest highlight
where you want to maintain detail - tell the enlarger what paper you are using,
and it comes back with suggestions for contrast grade and time (and sets those
on the control panel). This is usually a good starting point, and does away
with strips. If I were to stop there, I would end up with decent images, but
the bulk of my time is spent trying to figure out what exactly I want to say
with that image - do I want to adjust the contrast or exposure? - what
burning/dodging plan do I want to implement? How do I want to process this
image - toning etc? - If all I want is to get a print which is a recognizable
facsimile of my original subject - that can be done in a matter of minutes - to
use that negative to do the best possible
job of conveying what I was thinking when I made the exposure is a process
which will take considerably longer.
