[pure-silver] How Many Watt Seconds are Enough?

So how many watt seconds is enough? Have I missed any makes in making my
choices?

Nick,

The first question you need to answer before we can give you a 100% valid answer is at what flash to subject distance will you be working...

I do not use monolites. I use a speedotron system that connects all heads to one power/controller unit. If I had it to do over I would buy a set of monolites.

I'm not sure that having to buy direct from the Alien Bees mfg is so bad. I know a couple people who are shooting those lights and they have been working for about three or so years now without problems...

As to power, in a normal portrait situation you will likely never need anything stronger than 400ws. My Speedotron system is 1600ws at full power and knocked down to it's lowest setting it will deliver 400ws to a single head or distribute that power amoung up to four heads. I often wish I could knock the power level down even further... I bought the 1600ws system with a specific task in mind. I wanted to be able to run a flash head up high at a church and use it as a single broad light source to light the entire alter area in the front of a church. I have actually used the system for this
one time and it did the job very well...

My "monolite solution" is actually even a bit more mobile. I am using the Quantum Q flashes with the Norman 400B battery pack. This gives you a light weight variable power head that is powered by a rechargable battery. Using this system you can leave the drop cords at home!

Hope this helps!
Speedy
