[pure-silver] Re: High contrast printing?

Thank you Bob

The Toning book is the only one out of print at the moment. I am heartened
by the comments on this by you all and will look into republishing.

DEAR TIM,

When (notice I am being optimistic and not saying "if") you are
republishing both books please don't forget to announce them on this list
and the Alt Photo List. You will get good sales off them.

Also, be certain to send info to Photogs Formulary, Silverprint,
Digital Truth, etc., etc. The viewers of these sites are a ready market.

                        CHEERS!

                                    BOB

Distribution is not an issue with the likes of Lulu an Blurb. They take
care of that for you. You never touch a single book. Sales are a different
issue, but you are in a unique situation. A link from your website to the
Lulu site, an note at the bottom of your email newsletter and probably some
proper tags when uploading and you are selling 24 7. If you had to handle
shipping individual books it would take huge amounts of time for not much
reward.

I am not a publishing guy, but I can suggest someone who does know something
about PDF publishing. He is the publisher of Lenswork magazine Brooks
Jensen and does the Lens Work podcast. In fact drop him a note and he might
be willing to publish it himself. IIRC he was doing the printing of his own
mag so he probably has the ability, but not sure if that is something he
would tackle. IF he got an email from "THE" Dr. Tim Rudman, with the
marketing arm of his mag following, who knows the two of you just might be
able to work out a deal that's a win win for both. Lately he has moved more
an more online.

We all know how time is a precious thing and we all certainly respect how
busy you are. We all respect any decision you might make that is in your
best interests. We just are hoping you will make those decisions based on
the best information possible.

Bill, Mark, Elias,

Thank you all for your advice and support. I really appreciate it.

I will make some copies as you suggest.

Thank you too for your offers of help, also much appreciated. I will
probably return to this when I have a bit of time, Right now lots of things
are happening all together and I feel a bit overloaded.

I think that self publishing is only the first step though. Distribution and
sales are another matter, which a conventional writer doesn't get too
involved in and may not develop the experience needed as the publisher
handles most of that.

Hi Tim,

Blurb has recently started printing books from PDFs, which is a "universal"
format, and I would think that the DVD in Quark could be copied out into
Portable Document Format for printing. Something to explore -- become your
own publisher! I'm sure you could get some help from listmembers.

It might seem that way Tim, but if you have it in Quark Express I really
don't think it will be any more than making a copy of that DVD and sending
it to them. I know some of those will even do MS Word documents. You
likely will have no more time invested in this than checking a website, a
couple of emails and sending them a DVD.

If you sold a print run of 4000 in the US alone, you are very likely to be
selling far more than just a book or two. You have had enough books out
there for name recognition and a reputation for your books being both
informative, an well written. You could make more by self publishing than
you could with a publisher. Now if you had written a novel that would be
bought by tens of millions, its a different story.

What ever you decide, (and if I can help feel free to email me off list)
please do us all a favor. Make several copies of that DVD today and store
them in several different places. One of which if it were my book would be
in a bank safety deposit box. That way if something happens to that DVD all
is not lost. That would be a big shame.

Well I have the DVD from the publisher (although I haven't looked at it). It
was done by the designer in Quark express, which I don't have and don't know
enough about to use but I understood that blurb et al have their own layout
software and I assumed that there would be compatibility problems.

Mark, I have only had the rights returned quite recently after the last US
book sold (the UK ones sold out very fast) and have been really busy since
then.

You are right, I did enjoy writing the book very much, but it was a lot of
work and took a lot of time. Not sure I have that time to allocate right now
for maybe only a handful of books. I would love to bring it back to market
but it seems daunting unless I find a publisher

Tim.

If you have the layout in electronic format, blurb, lulu or maybe any of a
host of publishing outlets would be able to reproduce it from the format in
which it currently exists. You already have the editing done. There should
be no need to re edit. Layout already exists. Unless you are going to
change it, you shouldn't need to redo anything. Some have software to make
it easier. I still think there is likely a place where it can be done with
the same material that printed the original book.

Lulu and Blur sell directly to the customer, they collect the cash and send
you a check. You as the author are not involved in the sales transaction to
the buyer. The beauty of it is that there is no need to produce anything
till its sold. You or a customer can buy just one book at a time if that's
what they want. Unlike in years past where an author would have to buy say
200 copies to sell themselves, that is not necessary anymore.

Most sites let you set your own price, the site charges for printing the
book and usually a transaction fee. If you do any extra marketing its all
to the good, and everyone wins. Once the word gets out that your books
are at X site, I am sure the customers will find you.

You had to have spent a great deal of time in the darkroom to have the
knowledge to write that book. You had to have enjoyed writing enough to
share that knowledge, so it would be a real shame to see it limited because
of the needs of a large publishing house.

Thank you Mark

I hear about online publishing but have no experience of it (preferring the
darkroom of course).

Recalling the many long weeks of layout, design and re-editing that preceded
the book I'm not sure it is so simple to reproduce via blurb or whatever.

Am I wrong?

Well Tim One thing I do hope you consider with your "out of print" books is
to not let them STAY out of print. Way too much valuable information there
to keep them unavailable. Though the niche may be too small for the big
publishing houses to make enough of a profit to keep them in print, this to
me seem to be the perfect situation for self publishing them. A place like
Lulu or Blurb or maybe any of a host of possible outlets are available with
minimal effort there to keep them available and profitable for you. The
hard work is already done.

I made a phone call to KEH the other day about trying to find some used Paul
Buff lights. The response was, "We almost never get any because anyone that
buys them keeps them." I suspect your books would fall into the same
category. Yet with self publishing, even if its just a few a month with no
up front investment its cash that wouldn't have been there otherwise and the
knowledge is still readily available.

Just my 2 cents worth or with inflation I better toss in a nickel.

Mark

Hi Harry
Yes the 1st LITH book (was actually my 2nd book) is the MPLPC and the 2nd
LITH book (actually my 4th book) is the WOLP.

The materials list you downloaded from my site is more up dated than WOLP
now and I will have to update it again this fall I expect, meanwhile the
newletters have been updating it. I can send you those if you want then,
together with the one about to go out, you'll be bang up to date and
somewhat ahead in fact as the latest news in it hasn't been released yet.

The WOLP is more than an update on materials though. It is the only
international collection of lith printers' work. As it is such a flexible
process it can be pushed into many different 'looks' and I felt that could
be inspirational. It also contains some newer techniques BTW.

Thank you, Tim, for all the free materials.

Just to be certain, your first book is 'The Master Photographer's Lith
Printing Course', and the second is 'The World of Lith Printing', right?

If so, I'm gonna buy the first one. And the second book has essentially the
same updated materials info. as the FREE REPORT on your web site?

The images of lith prints that I'm seeing on-line are really very special.
Very convincing.

Thanks,
Harry
