What about taking care of the contrast in the film development - and then get the most out of VC paper at grade 5? Not that I know... but since the better papers for this are gone.

The problem is that it would limit printing to very high contrast only. Normal negatives give the option of normal printing. There are various tricks to gettting very high contrast, one of which is simply duplicating the negative on high contrast stock.
