The was an article in Photo Techniques by the inventors of Xtol where
they state that Xtol produces finer grain and more film speed than D-76.
The differences are small but consistent and measureable.

I did not mean that the results were the same only that Xtol and
D-76 have a family resemblance. Xtol delivers about maximum film
speed, maybe 3/4 stop above D-76 and somewhat finer grain. If it was
more reliable it woud be about the optimum developer for a great many
films.
Microdol-X and Perceptol do yield a little finer grain than Xtol but
at the cost of more than a stop loss of speed.
Actually, I have a 5 liter bag of Xtol on the shelf and should mix
it and try it again.

If you try that bag of Xtol, please try to mix it with demineralized or
distilled water and the "multiple glass bottles completely filled"
method I already mentioned. I'm pretty sure that will solve your problem.
And keep some bottles for shelf-life tests, we may start a contest :-)
