The was an article in Photo Techniques by the inventors of Xtol where
they state that Xtol produces finer grain and more film speed than D-76.
The differences are small but consistent and measureable.

I did not mean that the results were the same only that Xtol and D-76 have a family resemblance. Xtol delivers about maximum film speed, maybe 3/4 stop above D-76 and somewhat finer grain. If it was more reliable it woud be about the optimum developer for a great many films.
Microdol-X and Perceptol do yield a little finer grain than Xtol but at the cost of more than a stop loss of speed.
Actually, I have a 5 liter bag of Xtol on the shelf and should mix it and try it again.
