Sulfite is very good with Rodinal but I followed Pat
Gainer's
advice and added 4 g/l of sodium ascorbate instead.
That makes the development faster so that 1+50+C times are
the
1+25 times.
Graininess decreases, tonality is smooth and sharpness is
not
affected.
I wonder if you could also add ascorbate to D76
Xtol is essentially a D-76 type developer using Ascorbic
acid and Phenidone in place of the Hydroquinone and Metol.
There is no magic in Ascorbic acid. By itself it is not a
very satisfactory developer but it is superadditive with
both Metol and Phenidone in a way similar to Hydroquinone.
The main advantage of Ascorbic acid is that it is
environmentally friendly. It can not be used as a
substitute for Sulfite, the functions are different.
