Gigabit film is a microfilm (most likely made by Agfa). Their developer
is an extremely low contrast developer essential to tame the high
contrast of the microfilm. There's nothing new about such a
combination. In the 70's there was a company that sold such a
combination under the name H&W Control.
While such combinations can yield virtually grainless prints with
extreme detail there are some problems. =20
1) The contrast of the negatives, while lower than normal for microfilm,
is still higher than what is considered normal for continuous tone
negatives. This makes them difficult to print and is the most serious
drawback.
2) The film has little or no exposure latitude requiring exposures be
bracketed. =20
3) Lens faults are emphasized because of the lack of grain in the
negatives. In fact, unless you have a really high quality lens, your
prints will appear less sharp than if you had used a conventional film
such as Efke 25.
4) The film and required developer are expensive. 35mm microfilm is not
perforated so the user is locked out of any alternative source of film.
Gigafilm has the film perforated especially for their sales.
I have not tried this latest incarnation and have no inclination to do
so after previous disappointments. Perhaps Gigabit has overcome the
inherent problems. H&W went out a business after the initial flurry of
interest waned because of basic dissatisfaction.

Hi all,
I was reading the Zeiss newsletter yesterday and they are talking about
the=3D
Gigabitfilm:

website...)
Looks like it's been out for a while now (no 120 though,
unfortunatelly). A=3D pparently it was reviewed in the British B&W
magazine, which I receive, but=3D I missed it. I'll have to look for it
when I'm back home.
Does anyone know anything about it? JandC are selling it in 35mm.
Thanks!
Manu
