I am afraid that as an engineer who works in the HD
Video Production Equipment industry, I am partially
responsible :(.
It is true that a huge portion of the analog film
market is for the prints that are distributed to movie
theatres, and that this will be transferred over to
digital as the technology gets better and more
affordable (some very interesting concepts are in play
now...)
One interesting thing that is happening is that
several of the major dramatic television series (CSI,
Law and Order etc), are being filmed on analog film,
then digitized. The reason for this is that the
directors prefer the look of the analog film vs the
very sharp, high contrast HD video cameras on the
market now. Much of this is being shot in 16mm, and a
friend of mine who is retired from Kodak, but still
does some consulting for them, says that the
television production market is significant for Kodak
analog film sales.
