In addition to the wax-like polishes recommended by Rchard and Howard, the other meaning of "polish" is a fine abrasive which would be used before the wax if the metal were not smooth enough. Kodak used to recommend an aloxite abrasive (= aluminium oxide) if I remember correctly, and they specified a certain extremely fine grade. They said "no other grade would do" and it was extemely fine. I can't stress "extremely fine" enough. It was amazingly fine. The last thing you want is little scratches all over your ferrotyping plate. I notice on the web that there are aloxite polishes for lens finishing. Maybe it was that fine.

In the past Kodak sold a solution called Ferrotype Plate Polish, does anyone know what its ingredients were or what today would be a suitable replacement?
