DEAR CHARLIE,
I assume you either use print tongs or gloves. You don't
put your
hands directly in the developer and other solutions do
you? If you use
tongs or latex/vinyl/nitrile gloves and you STILL get an
allergic reaction
to Dektol then you should definitely switch to something
like the
Silvergrain stuff.
If you DO put your hands in the solutions, STOP! Use
tongs or
gloves. Most developing agents are based on Phenols,
compounds constructed
around the benzene ring. They ALL lodge in your liver and
are VERY hard to
remove (chellate; sp?). Metol is a bad one for allergies
and Kodak has had
warnings about it on all if their developer packaging for
as long as I have
used their developers (1961).
CHEERS!
BOB
Probably all developing agents are sensitizers to some
degree. The worst seems to be paraphenylenediamine with
Metol not far behind. Hydroquinone is also toxic. Tongs are
definitely a good idea. I suggest nitrile gloves because
many people are sensitive to latex, and beside, nitrile
seems to be less permeable to photographic chemicals.
The nature of sensitizers is that one can get away with
contact for a long period after which the sensitivity
develops. PPD and Metol can cause an exima-like rash which,
at its worst, can be debilitating.
There are other substances in photo solutions that can
also cause alergic reactions. One of them are the almost
ubiquitious sulfites but some are just sensitive to the
alkaline and acid solutions.
