DEAR CHARLIE,
I assume you either use print tongs or gloves. You don't put your
hands directly in the developer and other solutions do you? If you use
tongs or latex/vinyl/nitrile gloves and you STILL get an allergic reaction
to Dektol then you should definitely switch to something like the
Silvergrain stuff.
If you DO put your hands in the solutions, STOP! Use tongs or
gloves. Most developing agents are based on Phenols, compounds constructed
around the benzene ring. They ALL lodge in your liver and are VERY hard to
remove (chellate; sp?). Metol is a bad one for allergies and Kodak has had
warnings about it on all if their developer packaging for as long as I have
used their developers (1961).
CHEERS!
BOB

I've standardized on Dektol 1:3. I've also used Ilford MG
and PQ, in addition to Agfa Neutol WA. I liked Agfa when I
was doing warmtone work but it's not available anymore. Dektol
gives a nice full range with good dmax. And it's relatively
cheap. I get more high-quality working solution per dollar
than with any other prepackaged developer.
I would like to try Bromophen though. I get skin irritation
if I work with Dektol too long (6hrs+). I've heard this is
from metol and that a PQ developer is better in this regard.
Truth is, none of my local photo stores carry it and I've
just been too lazy to mail-order any. Dektol is available
everywhere!

I've used four developers so far: Ilford MGD, Silvergrain Tektol
(Standard & Neutral), Sprint Silverfast, and Dektol. Ilford MGD was
fine, good all-around. Silvergrain was very finicky about room temp,
and even though I like it's lack of poisons and pollutants, I can't
say got the most out of it. I should really try it again someday, but
I'd be curious what others think about it. Sprint really does give a
neutral to cold black, but doesn't give me the range of tones that
Dektol gives (or maybe that's my imagination). Dektol seems to be my
favorite. To my eye it makes a rich and warm black, it's cheap, and
it's forgiving on room temp. What about you?
