I  would add Woodbury type here, where the plate is made of lead, and the image 
is cast off the lead plate in relief.
I do agree that limited edition's make most physical sense where you have a 
medium which deteriorates with use.
However in photography you may revisit the same negative years later, and print 
it very differently. This is where limited editions could cramp your ability 
produce your best work.
As a marketing tool artificial scarcity is classically successful in the 
diamond industry.
