I haven't received it yet. But it is an old Omega so my guess it's metal. Magnetic I don't know. How hard would it be to remove the magnets? I've got some super duper magnets that I swear want to fly across the room they're so 
strong -)

The magnetic sign material is not that strong. It will hold firmly enough to keep a sheet of paper flat, but will easily peel off by simply lifting a corner. It is magnitized as a series of closely spaced strips so there is a strong field close to the surface but the field does not extend out that far.
