Rubylith is a red film used in graphics application, among
others. It was
and still is used as a mask ( for B+W ... I do not know
about color).
If you buy some rubylith ( thin plastic, comes on a roll)
and cut out your
desired size, and internal size, this would work and
provide sharp edges.
Holding it down using some less than all powerful magnets
would work, but a
top mask of cardboard and then the magnets would work even
better.
Someone suggested a magnetized sign ( like realtors use on
the sides of
their BMWs...) this sounds to me like a good
suggestion.... Getting them
cut to a precise size may be more challenging.

You may be able to find suitable magnets at an office
supply place. They are also known as refrigerator magnets
because they are used to hold notes to the front of a
refrigerator. These come in small squares or circles or in
fairly long strips.
I have had some success making printing masks from plain
black "kraft" paper, AKA construction paper. Try art supply
stores for this. It is available in fairly heavy gauge. You
can cut it using an Exacto knife or make two L sections for
a universal mask.
