If you're not going to have time to test a new film/developer
combination to see how it works before shooting a batch of film,
then I'd suggest sticking with D-76/ID-11.  I'd develop the first
roll according to the Ilford guideline and adjust after that.  You'll
almost certainly get printable negs this way.

For any other combination, I wouldn't want to shoot anything
I care about before running at least one test.
