[pure-silver] Re: Death Valley

Hi Bob,

Thank you for the kind invitation.

I was supposed to be accompanying my wife on her two week trip to San Diego in mid August, but the person who was supposed to be staying at the house to feed out three cats had to back out at the last minute due to personal reasons. I even had my ticket which is not on hold and good for a year. Always welcome company when I am down there; makes the photo excursions more interesting. When in San Diego, I like to drive up to La Jolla to a place (forget the street but remember the buildings) on the beach that has these incredible black rocks that go out into the ocean. Spent a day photographing there when I was last in San Diego a couple of years ago. You get the impression of giant beached whales and then the waves break over the rocks; especially impressive at high tide. Then while my wife is at the Zen Center in San Diego, I usually go off to the desert and stay a week in Boreggo Springs, exploring the Badlands, the Salton Sea.

Where do you live in the area? With the half dozen times we've been to San Diego in the past ten years, I've gotten to know the area pretty well I also do 8x10 with a Calumet but the 8x10 and my other other LF, 4x5 and 5x7 stay at home when I travel. For traveling, I go with 6x6 as i did this time to Death Valley. Even then, the security hassles at the airport are a real pain. This time, on the way back through Las Vegas, they took my whole camera back pack apart and x-rayed both Yashica-Mats and the Perkeo II folder that I use for shooting 6x6 slides. On top of that, I have a titanium hip replacement which inevitably sets off the detection machines and, of course, they don't believe you. had to go the a room, lower my pants and show them my scars on my hip, then they ran the hand held detection device over my hip until they were satisfied that the titanium was inside my body. What a pain for anybody who has any kind of metal implant in their body. The you have to put all you camera gear back into the pack back. I don't know but there has to be an easier way. On top of that, every time, I go to San Diego, I'm also the passenger who gets picked for a random search just before I board the airplane. I think that they have a thing about photographers and camera gear.

Anyway, I'll probably use my ticket later on in the fall and go to either Anza Borrego or Death Valley again. I will get in touch if I go.

I sort of immersed myself in the darkroom since I got back but I am preparing a "report" for the *pure-silver* group, especially as pertains to the problems I had with the light leaks in the 124G Yashica when I was using 220 film. Been using the 124G here with 220 film and no leaks. I think that the heat was the contributing factor.

Cheers,
Bogdan

Bogdan,

If you're out here in the San Diego area and want some company on
a trip in the area let me know. I'm always looking for an excuse
(also called "a reason") to take off 'work' and spend a day or
two doing real work. My usual format is 8x10, but I can work with
(and have the equipment for) most any format as necessary.
And in case no one is picking up the tab for hotel, we've a guest
room with bath (not to mention darkroom and studio) that any
photographer or philosopher is welcome to. We live about 30 miles
NE of town in the county; directions are necessary when you
decide to come. Have a great time in DV.
Bob

Hi Bob,

I've been to the Anza Borrego Desert six times now in the past
ten years. While my wife is otherwise occupied in San Diego, I go
off to the desert. Stay at the motel in Borrego Springs. Love the
place, Salton sea, so desolate..... such beauty!
