Dear Chris,
You are very wise, closing your eyes. About 15% of people born after
1945 - the year of the first atomic explosions - actually emit K rays from
their retinas and in some cases these rays can be converted by chemicals in
the air to form minute shafts of visible light. You would risk fogging your
emulsions, particularly if you were using infra-red film.
Apparently this percentage climbed a little during the periods of
atmospheric testing but has dropped after the tests were put underground.
Mind you, the percentage is still high in Nevada. I have no idea if they
develop films out at Muraroa Atoll.
