Yes, white side out when un exposed, and dark side out when exposed. I try
not to leave the holders open at all unless they are in the camera or being
unloaded to keep the dust out.

For me, white side out means unexposed, dark side out
means exposed.  I leave the darkslide pulled out about
an inch if there's no film loaded.
