[pure-silver] Re: D-Max with pyro

I've found WD2D+ negatives to seem thin, in general.  They tend to print quite easily but lack overall density (but I've played with a couple of developer batches).  PyroCat HD results in a more "normal" looking negative and as has been mentioned, there is more actual density than is apparent visually.  I've been playing with some various catechol and pyrogallol based concentrates over the past 6 months or so and the WD2D+ results were  noticeably thinner than the rest of the tanning formulas I tried.  Rollo TEA, Jay's 510 and HyperCat and some of my home brewed concoctions all seem to give densities that look and measure more like the traditional, non-staining developers on most films.  Most tanning things I've tried, even with higher D-Max readings, seem to separate highlights quite nicely, though.

For those of you that use a pyro developer,

Is it normal for the D-Max on a pyro-developed piece of film to be noticably less than that with 'normal' developer on the same type of film? (I don't have a densitometer, so I can't give you a reading, but it is very noticeable, side by side.)

When I look at the leader of film done in, say, Diafine, then at the leader done in WD2D+, the density is noticeably less with the pyro film. I've noticed that I have to print pyro negs with higher contrast than non-pyro, but I understand that is somewhat understandable, because pyro is a little softer-acting that a normal developer. (?)
