[pure-silver] Re: D-Max with pyro

Russ is correct. I've processed many, many sheets of 8x10
(Bergger) in PMK (Formulary liquid version). I don't
presoak. I get all the stain I need (a rich,
greenish-yellow-brown) even without the after-fix soak back
in the developer. And I can inspect the film after about 3/4
of the planned time (the dark green safelight). It prints
beautifully with a Grade 3ish setting of the magenta dial on
my enlarger.

But you HAVE to use a water stop bath; AND an alkaline fixer
such as TF-4 (with plenty of ventilation). After which,
washing increases the stain further. I do pay a fairly high
price in film speed, with the Bergger 200 coming in at
50-100 depending upon the depth of the shadows I want to
get.

For stand processing I use Pyrocat-HD (also the liquid
version from Formulary). It is not a staining developer. It
keeps the open areas clear, but you do have to use a
pre-soak; and the first agitation really does need to be for
a full minute; and the second for at least 30 secs or so.
Otherwise I do (did) get streaking in open areas, i.e., sky.
And as with the PMK, Bergger seems to overrate their film
speed.
