Just finished up in the darkroom printing 11x14's from two 5x7's of one
of the ruins in Hoovenweep on the Colorado side. They were taken
sequentially with the same settings on FP4+ with the thoughts of having
a spare negative and of developing one in PMK and the other in Dixactol
for a head to head comparison. Of course, they look quite different to
the eye but other than my having bumped up the contrast of the PMK neg a
bit too much and having to add 30Y to compensate, they seemed to print
the same on Polymax FB. I'll examine them more closely tomorrow. Also as
a head to head I used two enlarging lenses. The first was a 150 f/5.6 EL
Nikkor, the older one with the 53mm thread, which no one says covers 5x7
but works beautifully. The other was a 180 f/4.5 APO-Rodagon which ought
to work fine and does. There doesn't seem to be much info around on this
lens. Richard? Again, there doesn't seem to be anything to choose from
between these lenses except that for an 11x14 the focus knob is in easy
reach with the 150! Neither showed any signs of falloff in the corners.
The only thing I have against Dixactol, which I normally just use on my
roll films, is its propensity to die in a much shorter time than the
PMK. If it has been any appreciable time since mixing I will run a test
on a snippet first. PMK seems to go on forever as does the Ansco 130
that I use for the paper.
