DEAR BECKY,
Did you notice the figure studies on my site? They would also have
been removed, wouldn?t they?

I was gone for a week but I'm back.
Bob, I enjoyed seeing your photograph of Michelangelo's statue. I enjoyed
the whole gallery.
As for the photos that were taken down from the Mistlin Gallery, they are
being shown in a nearby town. :)

I have been forwarding her some of the postings and she said that
Michelangelo's statue has more obvious sexual content than the photos that
were removed from the show.

Which completely supports the point that it is the job of art
educators, museums, galleries and artists to help the public understand
what
has been going on in photographic art since the 1920s...the
understanding
that a photograph can be MORE than, or DIFFERENT from, a simple
representation!
Recently I gave a lecture on what constitutes value in art. I
always start this type of lecture by holding up a b&w photographic
print of
an automobile. I ask the group, "What is this?" The vast majority
say, "It
is a car." I then proceed to hit on of the audience over the head with
the
print. Everyone laughs. I ask, "Why is he/she still alive? I have
just
dumped a car on his/her head!" They moan and say, "but it is just a
photo
of a car" to which I reply "RIGHT!!! A two dimensional, monochromatic
representation and abstraction from the REALITY OF THE SUBJECT!!! This
is
more than semantics...it is fundamental to the understanding of the
artistic
capabilities of photographic art!"
You are right that the photographically uneducated public sees a
photo as the reality of the subject. We all hope that gallery owners,
selection committees, fellow artists, and the more photographically
sophisticated public might know better. And, as said above, it is the
responsibility of these same more enlightened people to expose the
general
public to these concepts.

i think that a photograph makes difference from any other figurative
art. photograph is recognized by people as the reproduction of
something
'real' and when looking ad an image people feels in front of the
subject.
in front of one of those drawings (not bad ones, but not even nice
drawings, imvho) the 'watcher' simply sees something 'related' to a
nude
body, not a real one.
this is why, always imvho, people complained about nudes in
photography.
