I know that at least one of you is into astronomy and I need some help.

My granddaughter is 10 going on 25 and has shown some interest in astronomy and I would like to buy her a telescope. I don't want to spend a large amount since there is a good possibility that in a few months she will put it in a closet and not use it again.

I have been researching what is available and am overwhelmed. Even a beginner's telescope has a huge amount of options. Besides,my budget is very limited.

Can someone help, preferably off-list?

This question comes up regularly in astronomy circles. I have several excellent links with discussions about cheap telescopes. These are in german, but it should be possible to find similar info in english.

My advice: do you have a pair of useable bincoulars? If yes, buy a tripod mount for binoculars and a beginners book on astronomy. The most valuable help would be a friendly fellow amateur astronomer who knows where to look at. It should be possible to find someone in your vincinity who helps a total beginner to find objects suited to their equpiment.
