We already practice gift economy at various parts of our life beyond the
mainstream market like for example, we share music, movies, art works of
other forms among our friends and expect nothing in return but it makes us
feel happier because we contribute something better for the other. At the
same time, though we don't expect anything back, the receiver might gift us
something (not, necessarily, immediately) based out of this social capital.
Such practices strengthens the social relationships between the humans
participating.
So this was our idea. Since this is a free software and hardware
movement, we thought of starting this practice by sharing spare hardware or
hardware that lay unused with us. Didn't include software or any digital
content since we are already practicing gift economy with it.
The hardware could be anything like unused mouse, unused headphones,
unused wires, unused keyboards, books, etc., whatever is material and
whatever you think you would like to share with others.
1. Everyone can bring whatever hardware they have (either unused or
spare is available).
2. At the end of the meetup, people can put their stuff to display so
others can view it and ask for it.
3. Resources can be shared on two basis.
1. Lend (resource should be returned after a period of time or
whenever the sharer needs it).
2. take away (need not return back).
4. Similarly each of them can also list down things that they are
looking for in a paper and keep it along with their stuff, so that others
viewing, if they have, can inform about it's presence with them.
5. Strictly no trading (no buying or no selling).
6. A person, if they have nothing to share with others can also
participate.
7. No discrimination based on race, color, gender, religion, caste,
language, geographical location, or anything is allowed.
Let me know what do you people think about it? If there are no
objections, I wish we shall start this practice from coming weekend.
On this note, I should also add that Mohanraj (who is also in our mailing
list) from Opendrops have also built a website specifically for Pondicherry
for practicing gift economy. I have already asked him to release the source
code under GNU GPL v3 License or compatible free software license, unless I
discourage sharing that site here in our mailing list.
