James,

the next server (v. 7.17) will have a telnet agent which enables telneting into
a packet node to get your mail. For this you need a packet node which
allows telnet access via the internet. I am testing this at the moment and
I can now handle my packet mailbox at DB0PDF via pskmail.

The other route has not been taken yet. I.e. adding a telnet
port to the server so you can use the agents
on the server via your VHF packet system.

For this the server has to be upgraded to multi-connect, which is on the
to-do list.

It would also be easy to build a dedicated server for packet access.
The code is modular, so it will be easy to isolate the application layer
module and add a telnet input to it. This could then be combined with
e.g. an (X)net node on the same machine, or JNOS.

We would need a volunteer with some spare time and perl programming skills
who wants to do this.
