I was not thinking about adopting the ALE protocol, but to build a
viable low power alternative, and to have a look at the goodies they
have (like the LQA principles you mentioned) and maybe offer the email
and messaging facility the ALE group is interested in. And maybe there
are ways to organize some form of interoperability. Maybe not on link
layer, but on application software level.

One reason for the action is to get the pskmail frequencies on the map
now that there is still a possibility to find a relatively clear spot.

At least Bonnie has shown she understands what we are doing :)

I am e.g. thinking of automatically linking up clients which are linked
to different servers on different bands, with routing via the internet.
A bit like the APRS messaging we have already, but with an L3 routing
layer added. Once a beacon is heard we know where to reach the client.

I am also looking into an MT63 (2kHz)-driven ftp service based on LTP
principles, for disseminating pictures, propagation maps, weather maps,
grib files etc., the stuff which would take too long for interactive
operation. And where the mobile station has lots of receive time and
very little on transmit (battery use). The data can be MT63 and the
reception reports via Pskmail PSK63 unproto, maybe on a completely
different channel or band. This is a long-term project which still needs
some thinking, but you cannot think ahead far enoung...
I have a K2 standing around, which takes only 150 mA on receive.

I am glad we have an ALE specialist in our ranks, so we don't make the
mistakes others have made already:)

Just a few thoughts, I have too much time for thinking at the moment,
better take some holidays...
