Maybe I'm having a mental block, but the only plural alternative to
"somebody" that I can think of is "somebodies" which no one really
uses. Is it possible that Dever meant for "somebody" to mean Lone Wolf
detects an indeterminate number of people? This would make "they" OK.
Plus, we've been accepting "they" as a gender-agnostic singular
pronoun.

Assuming I understand the 'use of "they" as a gender-agnostic pronoun' correctly, I am guessing the following four similar issues can also be Rejected:

The Dark Crusade:

(er) 166: The garrison is thrown into a state of near-panic as they -> The garrison is thrown into a state of near-panic as it [LeRoy McSwain Feb 2007]

(er) 296: You detect they are somewhere -> You detect he is somewhere [LeRoy McSwain Feb 2007]

"You can hear someone breathing. You detect they are somewhere below ground and you call out to Captain Schera to come quickly."

The Legacy of Vashna

(er)    275:    each...in their -> each...in his [LeRoy McSwain, Jan 2007]

"At the longboat’s prow there stand a trio of Acolyte Elders, each holding a glowing wand of power in their outstretched hands."

(er) 279: who they are -> who it is [LeRoy McSwain, Jan 2007: singular to agree with antecedent 'somebody']

"Your Kai senses inform you that there is somebody inside and, spurred on by curiosity, you resolve to find out who they are."
