Re: visual basic dot net 2005 esxpress

I found the MSDN Article on UnInstalling Sql Server 2008. You can go down the page to get the page on how to UnInstall 2005. After reading the following I am not sure about the process except the actual removal of the modules using the Control Panel which is what I did in 2005. I am also not sure about backing up all the files and folders they are talking about. It would seem to me they are for particular products outside the DataBase itself that use the DataBase but I don't think Marv is using IIS and I don't know about the other folders or files. The process is diferent than I remember when I did 2005 back in the day. I recommend carefully reading the articles related to UnInstalling Sql Server and related components, any blogs about the process or problems others have encountered, setting up a plan then taking a system backup point before you try it. I'm not sure what needs to be done from the below laundry list of things to do and they do not mention any of the Advanced Tools or other optional features that were available in the 2005 version so those things would need to be removed if there as well.
Anyway here is the article to get a flavor for what they recommend doing:
Oh ya, here is the url where you can find out more:
As usual Microsoft is never as cut and dry as one might hope!

How to: Uninstall an Existing Instance of SQL Server (Setup)
This article describes how to manually uninstall a stand-alone instance of SQL Server. By following the steps in this topic, you also prepare the system so that you can
reinstall SQL Server.
ms143412.note(en-us,SQL.100).gif
Important:
To maintain or update an instance of SQL Server, you must be a local administrator
with permission to log on as a service.
Consider the following important information before you use this procedure to uninstall
SQL Server:
We recommend that you use
Add or Remove Programs
in Control Panel to uninstall SQL Server.
On a computer that is running SQL Server together with earlier SQL Server versions, Enterprise Manager and other programs that depend on SQL-DMO might be disabled. This
can occur in the following situations:
Side-by-side installations of any combination of SQL Server 2008, SQL Server 2000,
and SQL Server 7.0, where any one or more of these instances is uninstalled.
Side-by-side installations of SQL Server 2000 with SQL Server 2008, where SQL Server
2000 is installed after SQL Server 2008.
This issue is caused by removal of the registration for the SQL Server SQL-DMO COM library. To re-enable Enterprise Manager and other programs that have SQL-DMO dependencies,
register SQL-DMO by running
regsvr32.exe sqldmo.dll
at the command prompt. For more information, see
Troubleshooting an Installation of SQL Server
.
Before you remove SQL Server components from a computer that has the minimum required amount of physical memory, make sure that the page file size is sufficient. The page file size must be equal to two times the amount of physical memory. Insufficient
virtual memory can cause an incomplete removal of SQL Server.
In SQL Server 2005, the SQL Server Browser was an integrated installation together with the Database Engine or Analysis Services. In SQL Server 2008, the SQL Server Browser is a separate installation, performed automatically with the Database Engine or Analysis Services. If you have multiple instances of SQL Server 2008, the SQL Server Browser will uninstall automatically when the last instance of SQL Server
2008 is uninstalled.
If SQL Server 2005 exists on the system with one or more instances of SQL Server 2008, the SQL Server 2008 Browser will not be removed automatically when the last instance of SQL Server 2008 is uninstalled. The SQL Server Browser that is installed with SQL Server 2008 will remain on the system to ease connections to the instance of SQL Server 2005. You can leave the SQL Server 2008 Browser installed with SQL
Server 2005 and it will continue to function correctly.
To uninstall all components of SQL Server 2008, you must uninstall the SQL Server
Browser component manually from
Programs and Features
in
Control Panel
. If you remove the SQL Server 2008 Browser when a SQL Server 2005 named instance is present, connectivity to SQL Server 2005 might be disrupted. In this situation,
you can reinstall SQL Server Browser in one of the following ways:
Repair the instance of SQL Server 2005 by using
Programs and Features
in
Control Panel
.
Install an instance of the SQL Server 2005 Database Engine or Analysis Services.
Before you remove SQL Server, follow these steps:
Back up your data.
You might have databases that you want to save in their present state. You might also want to save changes that were made to the system databases. If either situation is true, make sure that back up the data before you uninstall SQL Server. Alternatively, save a copy of all the data and log files in a folder other than the MSSQL folder.
The MSSQL folder is deleted during uninstallation.
The files that you must save include the following database files. These files are
installed as part of SQL Server:
Distmdl.*
Master.*
Mastlog.*
Model.*
Modellog.*
Msdbdata.*
Msdblog.*
Mssqlsystemresource.*
Northwind.* (This database is an optional installation.)
Pubs.*
Pubs_log.*
Tempdb.*
Templog.*
ReportServer[$InstanceName] (This is the Reporting Services default database.) ReportServer[$InstanceName]TempDB (This is the Reporting Services default temporary
database.)
Delete the local security groups
.
Before you uninstall SQL Server, delete the local security groups for SQL Server
components.
Save or rename
Reporting Services
folders.
If you use the SQL Server installation together with Reporting Services, save or
rename the following folders and subfolders:
<drive
\Microsoft SQL Server\Reporting Services
<drive
\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Reporting Services
<drive
\Microsoft SQL Server\<
SQL Server instance name>
\Reporting Services
<drive
\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Report Designer
ms143412.note(en-us,SQL.100).gif
Note:
If you used the SSRS configuration tool to configure the installation, the names might differ from the names in this list. Additionally, the databases might be located
on a remote computer that is running SQL Server.
Delete the Reporting Services virtual directories.
Use Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager to delete the following virtual
directories:
ReportServer[$InstanceName]
Reports[$InstanceName]
Delete the ReportServer application pool.
Use IIS Manager to delete the ReportServer application pool.
Stop all
SQL Server
services.
We recommend that you stop all SQL Server services before you uninstall SQL Server
components. Active connections can prevent successful uninstallation.
Use an account that has the appropriate permissions.
Log on to the server by using the SQL Server service account or by using an account that has equivalent permissions. For example, you can log on to the server by using
an account that is a member of the local Administrators group.

reminds me of a saying an engineer used;
"but... I cut it three times and it's still too short!"

alright, I hear you, *sigh* this a bit on the ridiculous side, its a set of programs, they should... have been made to install and uninstall simply with the only interlocking reaction being that if you use a data base with an application, and you remove the mssql application you can't use the database with a project made in the IDE.

ah well, I guess its time to listen to the voice of experience.

thanks,

Hi Inthane:
I found the MSDN Article on removing Sql Server Express 2005, at least the main components it did not address the Advanced Tools package if I remember. It had a series of steps which implied to me a sequence of events. I remember in 2004 when trying to remove 2005 version hhaving some problems because I did not follow a sequence of removing items. I don't know if this is still the case since my original version was a Beta version but it sounded like it to me when I saw the article. I could not find a similar article quickly about uninstalling Sql Server 2008 though I imagine it would be very similar. I am hesitant to recommend any sequence because of the potential system related problems that might occur if the whole thing goes horribly wrong. I saw articles about running 2005 and 2008 versions side by side so that might have been a better option, don't know. They told me to delete my Operating System and ReLoad Windows XP from scratch to fix my computer after I balled it up messing with the Beta UnInstall of Sql Server and Visual Studio Express 2005. I found a program like one of you put up that removed all the hanging modules, went through and manually deleted everything related to those applications and then had to use a video, ISO, version to ReLoad something, I don't even remember what it was, to get things working without completely rebuilding the Windows Operating System. I have been very careful about just UnInstalling anything since that experience.
Measure twice, cut once!

I would need to look it up myself, lol.

I still work in VB 6, and have poked the tip of a pinky into the .net IDE's, though I've collected some info which I share as I can.

but that doesn't include anything on removal sequencing, but if your removing it all, well, I won't say it doesn't matter, but I would think it not to significant. please let me know if I am wrong, OK?

sorry I can't be of more direct help,

okay,m will do that, once i get the installation problems worked out.
okay, so to short cut, which programming do i uninstall in order, instead of
having to spend a couple of hours to search for uninstallation order on
google.
cheers Marvin.

       Hi.
rick.
now, yes, uses the sql server 2008, and i think, sql server 2008 did not like some of the sql databases that i got off the net, for the book, off
the
cd i was provided, and yep, need to use sql server 2005, and vb.dot net
2005.
and got a lot of my in class exercises on cd, so can copy them back over. the main problem, is that i do not have a spare 100 hours to redo all the chapters, and the examples and the case studies and the exericses you wer
ehelping me with, unless, i go in and save the code modules and the
documents then i could then rebuild all the examples, and the exericses
and
the case studies, just rebuild the interfaces.
then just copy and paste the code back in, so that would be a quicker way
to
go about that.
so what would you recommend this course of action?
should i go down that route, uninstall vs 2008, and then install the 2005
and what do you recommend.
if i did it this way, would short cut a lot of time and effort, and
quickly
able to rebuild the applications for the chapters in the book, the
examples,
exercises and case studies.
okay, if you recommend that route, then suggest that to me.
my lecturer is using 2005, and the book is using 2005, the only reason why
i
got 2008, was that i did not have internet access, and a adaptive tech
person, who sold me jaws in tasmania, burned a copy of vs 2008 in the
first
place, even though i did request 2005.
oh well, lessons learned.
okay let me know.
what i should do and proceed from here onwards.
cheers Marvin.

Hi Inthane:
If that's the case he has a problem. My guess he will have to remove the 2008 modules, and then load up some version of 2005. I remember he also
was
messing with the DataBases so that might be problematic as well depending
on
which version he ended up using. The last thing I can think of is that he uses Access DataBases instead of the Sql Server DataBases as defined in
his
Projects and that might cause problems for his Instructor as well if he is not familiar with their setup and use. My guess the only way he is going
to
get it working is to work directly with his Instructor to match up the
versions of everything if he is to just send him a Project to load up and review per the original Course and Project requirements. I don't think I have any answers except to find out what his Instructor recommends. Sounds
like he will have to uninstall everything 2008 including the DataBase
systems. Then install everything that came with the original course and ReWrite his applications using the correct languages and DataBases if he wants to be in sync with the rest of the class. Other than that I wouldn't
recommend doing all that removing and ReInstallation as it might cause
some
real headaches if not done in the correct order.

I think, if I have it straight, that his instructor is using VB 2005, and
can't open the files he is making in 2008, backwards compatibility is
alright in general with MS, but the reverse usually doesn't work, and I do
not believe MS has made anything akin to the "MSO Viewers" that enable
folks to open and save a newer version of say a word document in an older
format so someone with the older office versions can use it.

Marv:
Before you attempt Downloading 2005 over 2008. What was the explicit
problem you could not resolve in 2008?
Were you having the problem in VWD or in Vb.net Winforms?
What statement was giving you the error which your instructor said was
due to the language version problem?
I really do not think the language version would cause you any problems unless you are copying and pasting code into a config file. So, tell me
what statement is not working so I can check it out.

Your instructor is a fool. They should work fine in 2008. There is
not
that big a language wise in VB .net 2005 and 2008. The errors your
having
are most likely typing errors.

Hi.
got a whole heap of examples, for my programming class, exercises,a nd
did
them in vb dot net 2005.
but converted them to all vb dot net 2008, but some of them are not
working
and got errors.
did e-mail my lecturer, and he says, that the book they are using in
class
is for vb dot net 2005, and i am using 2008.
so, where can i download vb dot net 2005 express, and also is there a conversion utility to convert from vb.dot net 2008 to 2005, as a whole
of a
lot of exercises i did for the chapter book examples and some of the exercises and case studies, in vb dot net 2008, and do not have time to
go
and recreate them in vb dot net 2005, if i can get my hands on a copy? have tried searching on google, and went to the msdn site, but tried
looking, but cannot find any thing at all.
got any ideas?
cheers Marvin.
