Thanks to all for the explanations and offers of further help. The
professor eventually explained the whole thing in terms of a
one-dimensional array and explained the pseudocode in terms of said
array. That made more sense, and I turned the thing in today and got
100% on it. Next will be implementing a recursive substring finding
algorithm (this is, after all, an algorithms class) but I think I have
that one down...
