one last java question for now:editing java in jar files?

Hello all,
The way I understand it: jar files are java archives with .class and other
files.
This said, I have coffeemud that I'm looking to edit and play with, but
everything (so it seems) is a jar file. do I have to extract these to edit
the mud's workings?
