PHP is usually used in a linux environment. Right now I am guessing you are
just creating your pages in something like Notepad. Youcan create html pages
that way. When you have to work on your server for Database access, and other
server side functions, you need to use a computer language like PHP or some
language that is designed to run on a particular operating system. Allot of
languages have cross platform capabilities but there are often one version for
the Microsoft Operating system and one for the other major operating system
Linux. Most PHP developers use the Linux operating system since that is what it
runs on natively if I understand it. You can run it on a Microsoft Operating
system since it is a scripting language but to run it you need some special
third party software so it will run under the Windows Internet Information
Services Server. If you want to use PHP the way 90 percent of the PHP folks use
it you run it on a Linux based operating system or one that is designed to run
within the Windows environemt put out by some third party vendor. There are a
couple of popular choices like lamp or xamp, I'm not sure about those spellings
but I've heard the names before as choices to run a PHP, MySql type setup on
Windows.
There are some Linux guys floating around the list and they can give you more
information on those products. If you are going to build Websites using Visual
Web Developer I would forget about PHP and MySql and go with Visual Basic, a
part of VWD and Sql Server Express since they both have total support within
the VWD Environment while PHP and MySql do not have native support. If you are
good at using Microsoft Products and their Installers and know how to install,
UnInstall and debug failed installations using the many log files you can try
the WebPlatform Installer, set up IIS to run on your machine, if you have all
the necessary hardware and software prerequisits and then use PHP within VWD,
perhaps. You will also have to figure out some way to use MySql if that is the
database server you are using since it is not supported with any of the
built-in providers. You can use ODBC but you will have to figure out that
puppy. Anyway that is what I ment. Most php folks work in a Linux operating
system environment while most Visual Studio, all I think, work in a Windows
Operating system environment. Like I said there is third party software out
there that will make PHP work in a Windows Environment and one of those
packages is included with the WebPlatform Installer so PHP will run on Windows.

The WebPlatformInstaller will give you allot but it is a complicated install
with allot of modules. You need to be experienced enough to understand what you
are installing and how to use it. If you are not familiar with Visual Studio,
Visual Web Developer, SqlServer and IIS you should not tackle that package.
Uninstalling it might get pretty messy as well.
Do a little googling on the WebPlatformInstaller and the word problems
installing to see if you think you have the background to have any problems
just getting it all installed and configured.
If you can do it it should be a really nice solution but there is allot to
using it.
Why are you leaving the Linux environment if you have it already up and
running?
